Haruki Murakami on Structure

When I write, I don’t have any plan or structure whatsoever. I just sit down and start writing. When I started writing 1Q84, I only had this one scene: Aomame is in a taxi and stuck in a traffic jam, gets out of the taxi and descends an highway emergency staircase. The rest of the story then simply came to me. I don’t know if it’s a crazy story because it seemed so very normal to me when I wrote it.
